Diagnostic mammograms are follow-up exam that radiologists may recommend to provide a closer look at suspicious areas found in a screening mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram may rule out the presence of possible cancerous tissue or reveal that further diagnostic procedures, such as a breast biopsy, are needed to determine if cancer is present. Doctors may also order a diagnostic mammogram if a lump or other breast abnormality is discovered in a physical examination.
